I never thought about making my work meaningful. The reason was simple.
I thought that work is work no matter bad it seem to be.
And there are millions of people working at a job they hate so it doesn’t make sense to think about doing meaningful work.
The result?
I suffered. I suffered a lot. I was unhappy. I became sad. I got angry. I repented.
Until…
I came to know about few people. They were better than majority of us. They were known by the work they were doing because their work was making a positive difference in someone’s lives.
They were excited to go to work everyday which was not the case with me.
As I dug deeper into their lives, I was astonished by what was revealed to me.
There are 2 types of work that we do all day long.
-
By Compulsion.
-
By Desire.
First category involves work that you have no interest in doing but would rather do because you are being paid.
Second category involves work you’ll do at any cost without worrying about getting paid.
We all do both types of work many times in our life but I was shocked at what I discovered next.
Based on these 2 types of work, there are three categories of people.
Let’s name them as Good, better and best.
Good people are the majority.
These constitute 80% of people who work tirelessly in job they don’t have any interest. They work by compulsion. They get up, go to work, return, switch on the TV and sleep.
They don’t have any involvement outside work.
Their friend circle is mostly from their work place.
Given some money and a good opportunity, they are ready to leave their current work.
Better People are the next 10%.
These people work by compulsion but they also have life after work. They are chasing their dreams when home. They don’t spoil weekends on mindless activities and gossip.
They are stuck at a place but they have a dream, a vision to make their dream come true and they believe that it’s possible.
They believe that there is a way to jump ahead and make their life even better.
They mostly hang out with people with similar interests.
Remaining 10% are the best.
These are the people who are very successful in their field. They do all their work with desire and not compulsion. If they feel that an activity is not worth their time, they don’t spare a single second to do it. These are the people we admire and we all look up to as heroes.
And with this revelation, I wondered why were there so many unhappy faces doing work with compulsion?
Because they have been trained that it’s the only way to work.
Do the work you hate throughout your life and keep complaining why you are not happy with your life.
But it’s not like that always.
There is always a way. And the way is seen by those who are actively searching for it.
Let us not get defeated by accepting this as default way of life.
Dare to ask questions and who knows, you might see your life advancing like never before.
